A Year in the Algorithm
For nearly two decades, my professional life has been dedicated to technical support and tuition for music technology. Operating both on-site in the London area and remotely through Audio Support, my specialism has always been solving complex audio routing and hardware problems. My day-to-day involved untangling complex audio routing, configuring soundboards, and optimising microphone inputs for broadcast.
My philosophy has always been to make things work with the existing equipment a client possesses, rather than immediately insisting they invest in a brand new audio interface or expensive outboard compressors. It is a highly useful diagnostic skill in the creator space, and it earned me excellent feedback from my clients.

The “Dr. House” Dilemma and AI Administration
Despite the positive reviews and steady income, I quickly realised that I was entirely at the mercy of Fiverr’s algorithms. Visibility fluctuates wildly based on opaque metrics. A simple action, like messaging old clients, would suddenly trigger the algorithm to favour my profile, resulting in a flurry of new bookings. But the converse was also true.
The fundamental issue is one of fit. I often compare my consultancy style to Dr. House from the television series: highly analytical, exceptionally capable at diagnosing the problem, but entirely unsuited to rigid administrative systems. When you operate independently, clients seek you out for your specific expertise; they respect the diagnostic process. On freelance marketplaces, there is often a “race to the bottom” mentality that can be difficult to navigate.
The breaking point arrived recently when I was caught in an algorithmic glitch. I had received an email request to verify my identity, which I admittedly missed. When I attempted to rectify this on the platform, the system incorrectly showed my identity as unverified while blocking the process. The result? A swift, automated suspension of my account by an AI, with a blunt notification that no avenue for appeal was currently available.
Looking Forward
If my entire livelihood depended on Fiverr, this sudden suspension would be devastating. Thankfully, it does not. The platform provided a fascinating insight into the sheer volume of content creators struggling with poor audio, and I am currently considering training other broadcast sound engineers to service this remote market. However, for my own practice, I am returning my focus entirely to Audio Support, where working relationships are built on mutual respect, direct communication, and a shared appreciation for getting the technology right.
