The Client’s Challenge
Returning to a client’s studio is always a pleasure, especially when building upon a previous success. A few months ago, we had perfectly integrated their superb PreSonus StudioLive 32 digital mixer with Logic Pro. Now, with a powerful new Mac at the heart of the studio, the task was to replicate that seamless setup.
However, even a familiar path can present new obstacles. After meticulously following my own previous instructions for the installation, two deeply puzzling issues emerged:
- 1. The Vanishing Mixer: Despite all software being correctly installed, Logic Pro simply refused to see the StudioLive on the network. The very foundation of our control setup was missing.
- 2. The Fader Monoculture: When we did establish a connection, all the fader banks on the 32-channel desk were bizarrely mapped to the same first eight channels in Logic. Moving a fader on channel 25 would move the fader for channel 1. The desk was effectively reduced to an 8-channel controller, defeating its purpose.
This is a particularly frustrating scenario. When you follow a proven method to the letter and it fails, it can feel like the technology is actively working against you. The client’s confusion was entirely justified; the solution was hidden not in the main setup, but in the subtle nuances of system initialisation and control protocols.
Diagnosis
The Case of the Missing Handshake
The network issue was a classic case of a “cold start” problem. While we often expect modern devices to connect dynamically (plug-and-play), some complex hardware, especially those with dedicated network drivers, require a full power cycle to register properly with a new operating system. The new Mac’s network port and the PreSonus mixer hadn’t performed their initial, crucial “digital handshake.” The driver was installed, but it hadn’t been activated at the foundational boot level.
The Logic of Fader Offsets
The fader problem stemmed from the architecture of the Mackie Control protocol itself. It was originally designed for an 8-channel surface. To control more channels, the protocol uses “Extenders”—virtual 8-channel blocks that expand the controller’s reach.
By default, Logic assumes every new Extender is just another controller for channels 1-8. It’s our job to tell Logic that each Extender is responsible for a *different* block of channels. We do this by applying a “Fader Bank Offset.” Think of it like this: your main controller is ‘House Numbers 1-8.’ The first Extender needs to be told it’s responsible for ‘House Numbers 9-16′ (an offset of 8), the second for ’17-24’ (an offset of 16), and so on. Without these explicit instructions, every fader bank defaults to the first address.
The Fix
The solution was thankfully swift, involving a procedural step and a settings tweak—a classic example of knowing precisely where to look.

This case is a potent reminder of an age-old IT adage: “Have you tried turning it off and on again?” This isn’t a flippant dismissal; it’s a fundamental diagnostic step. When migrating to a new computer, a full, cold restart of all connected peripherals is often non-negotiable.
